Lemonade Magazine is a collective formed by five members: GAO Haoting, RUAN Wenhao, YANG Fan, LIU Haohui, and HUANG Yuzi.
There is a well-known English saying: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
Its literal meaning is simple: when faced with something sour, transform it into something sustaining, which is, in our case, to use photography to battle the mundanity or even suffering.
Inspired by this phrase, we adopt “Lemonade” as a metaphor for our photographic approach. We look at the world with a childlike gaze, attentive and unfiltered, recording whatever we find compelling. Photography becomes a process of turning the “lemons” life offers us into something distilled, something we can hold, reflect on, and share.
The kind of photography we pursue is deliberately unbounded. It is not confined by subject matter, nor driven by thematic obligation. It does not attempt to represent an era, nor to speak on behalf of others. It is rooted in immediacy: we photograph for the present moment, for emotional resonance, and for ourselves. Through the act of photographing, we seek to locate, understand, and gradually open up the self.
